We have some tips on how to decorate your sofa with the MLO collection - whether you want traditional or a more maximalist style
Traditional or Maximalist?
Traditional styling works best if you are wanting to achieve a classic look. This can be on an older style sofa or a modern one. It employs basic colour, a scene of order and balance and a subtle hint of class. This emphasizes order and predictable patterns. As such, you would aim to have an even number of cushions on the couch. Try 2 or 4 but no more because it will look cluttered. The cushions should be placed equidistant from one another. Alternatively you can have two cushions at either end of the sofa. If you are using different sizes, have the 2 sides mirror one another, for example, larger on the outside and smaller inside.
Maximalist Styling with Cushions
Maximalism is all about comfort. Be generous with colour, be painterly and create a room of art, decorating with what you love. Some of our vintage look fabrics are a must. Bold colours and patterns are essential ingredients - more is more. The real key to maximalist decor is pattern play. Mix up some patterns, play with scale and colour and cultures. Is pink your favourite colour? Choose a range of cushions in the pink family and add layers with rugs and paintings. And yes, animal print is a neutral, and animals as well. Bring the jungle inside! A riot of colour, pattern, art and textures - that’s exactly what a boho-luxe interior is made of. Don’t hold back. Using MLO’s unique and opulent cushions you can master the more is more look easily.
Three things to pay attention to when combining cushions. Scale. The size of the pattern. Colours - similar hues in equal intensity. Offset the two above by a piece of furniture (couch) in a solid colour. The backs of the cushions are mostly a solid colour also. This can easily be played with and different looks can be achieved depending on your mood by turning the cushions around.
Mix and Match Cushion Shapes
Squares, oblongs and circles make up the range of cushions available at My Little Opulence. To avoid things looking too samey don’t use cushions of the same shape and size. You can create a symmetrical look without having to create a mirror image at either end of a sofa. Create the illusion of balance. It’s ok to have a square cushion opposite a round one. Oblong shapes can work well in this mix also.
What is the best cushion insert?
My Little Opulence can’t get past the feather/down insert. Feathers are best at following the form of the cushion shape, and provide the most soft and comfortable cushion. We have sourced the best down and have had the cushions inserts custom made to fit our shapes.
What is the best fabric for cushions?
Designer home decor is easily achieved using MLO’s luxury cushions made with fashionable velvets and linens, curated globally, edited and handmade in Brisbane Queensland. Softer fabric is best for cushions, like velvet and linen, and they spell luxury and comfort. All cushion covers are meticulously sized to fit smugly on the custom inserts for comfort whilst lounging and relaxing. Make an opulent statement in your interior decor with fabrics that are unique and exclusive as they are made in very small batches so they are an investment. Why not start a collection? This range of opulence is only available online and in Brisbane at Chasing Chairs, a part of Empire Revival in Paddington.

]]>This spells freedom from the standard guidelines and rules. Furniture from say three different time periods can be combined to create the quirky and interesting. Layering is key in maximalist design and it is about embracing what is unique about you, an expression of your personality. By abandoning bland perfectionism you can combine many elements in a meaningful and organised way, not chaotically. Passion is the key ingredient to pulling off this home decor style.
There are some basic concepts to adhere to.
There is no wrong or right way to do this as it is about adding things you love to your home, you just need the desire to create a space that is truly unique to you. Here are some tips to gain some inspiration from.
Use a lot of colour
If you are looking through some interior design magazines to gather some ideas you will notice that maximalist interiors have a foundation of colour. Dark colours like black and navy are often used on walls, and the rooms are filled with bold bright accent colours and patterns to balance things out. Fabric is the best way to express yourself in this interior decor style, using unlikely colour combinations and different textures. Think about a velvet near to a silk satin for example with a luxurious fringe trim between. As colour is the anchor, choose three as the foundation of your decor and layer more shades through accessories such as cushions and throws. Be as generous as possible with colour and use plenty of jewel tones, moving right away from neutrals like beige and grey. You can be daring and bold with eye catching splashes of colour to some unexpected furniture.
Fill a wall with art
A gallery wall is the perfect way to express your artistic side. Maybe you have a collection, or maybe this is something that will grow organically as you find treasures that you love and want to look at. Really the only rule here is to make sure the pieces are spaced uniformly, the works themselves can be different sizes, even a mix of frames, and the more styles the better.
Decorate your home with decor that you love
We love our homes more when we decorate with things that we love. They can be wonderful objects found on your travels or things found near to home. And lots of them because maximalism means more. To stop your home looking too random though find a few common colours and patterns. There is a fine line between your decor looking like a train crash and an opulent masterpiece.
Remember you can’t have too many books
Whether you have tall bookshelves filling tall walls or just stack them on side tables and coffee tables, books are a must have. Not only are they beautiful, but they are personal. They talk about who you are, what you like, your interests and taste. Who doesn’t love a coffee table book collection also, with wonderful covers and spines these add another layer of detail to your interior.
Maximalism is all about comfort
The most glamorous and luxurious interiors combine glorious comfortable decor and colour. And what better way to add comfort than to decorate with colourful, delicious cushions in luxurious fabrics.
Create the best home decor space with cheer and charm
This is the best interior design style if you love happy colours and patterns. These interiors are warm and inviting, often utilising warm tones and flowery patterns. This bohemian gorgeous excess is wonderful to immerse yourself in. Gloominess has no room here with the mix of vibrant colours and patterns.
Add vintage accents
Some retro interior decor styles, such as Victorian and Art Deco, were all about excess, so adding vintage pieces of furniture and accessories will help to create a wonderful aesthetic. This interior style is not about perfection either, whilst there should be some unifying colours and patterns, it is the imperfections that create the charm. The expensive and inexpensive, modern and antique can mingle happily side by side. The use of pieces from varying time periods will ensure your look doesn’t date.
Maximalist home decor style Brisbane/home decor near me
Queenslander houses have their own distinctly versatile style and lend themselves easily to a classical, minimalist or maximalist interior decoration. Here in Brisbane, in suburbs like Paddington, Bardon, Ashgrove and Clayfield, the Queenslander was a popular building style from 1880 through until 1946. In the suburb of Paddington and surrounds, very near to My Little Opulence and Empire Revival, there are many fine examples to be found.
Common design elements are things like VJ’s, vertical joint walls that can extend from floor to high ceilings. Ornate cornices, ceiling roses and arches, timber casement windows and French doors. These things add a timeless elegance and beauty that is non-existent in today’s lego block houses. These old interiors lend themselves perfectly to a maximalist aesthetic and provide a wonderful blank canvas upon which to start layering artworks, furniture, and of course colourful fabrics.

If you have a king sized bed you will need three European pillows at the head of the bed to make it feel full. You don’t want large gaps in your pillow arrangement. This looks cheap, and nobody likes cheap! It’s a minimum of six pillows kind of scenario for king, queen and double beds. A row of European size at the very head, followed by sleeping pillows, one or two each, followed by 4 smaller squares or a few oblongs (2 or three depending on the bed size) displayed in front of the standard bed pillows. The more packed in, the more sumptuous the feel.
You can also go for a more maximal bohemian look in the bedroom, grouping some squares, some oblongs and some rounds. This will give the room a more relaxed and cosy but not stuffy feel. Certainly more inviting. You can even run a throw across the base of the bed. The tassels put the final touch on the opulent boho look. Chucking it on the end of the bed in an ‘unintentional’ fashion looks better.
Arranging sleeping and decorative pillows is something you can have a lot of fun with and express yourself. Remember, this is a sleeping room and you want to achieve a serene, relaxed glamour. Pillows are like art for your bed, they can make a room dance.
The best thing about bed pillow arrangement is that there is no wrong way to do it, but there are some basic methods that you can build on.
Things to keep in mind :
A headboard that is 2 feet high or more lends itself well to a robust collection with multiple pillows propped up for maximal decorative effect.
With no headboard you may wish to considera more basic arrangement of stacked pillows.
Beds with an open frame metal headboard look best with a smaller number of pillows that don’t obscure the framework.
Generally beds with big, uniformly shaped headboards offer the most scope when it comes to decorating with throw pillows. Bed covers are easily changed every time you launder so the opportunity to vary your look here is numerous. Pillows that have different fabric on the reverse make them versatile. Also all of our pillow covers are removable via the invisible zip so covers can be carefully taken off and changed.
]]>With a little bit of care and the right home decor items, you can really bring all the balance and calm look to your house. You can find quality products from our home decor stores. So, without wasting more time, let’s get to our main topic.
In this article, I will be sharing with you some easy tips and tricks that will change the look of your house. Besides, these tricks will also help you make your dream home on a budget.
Let’s start with cushions because they are the easiest and most affordable way of living room decor. There are many reasons to start with these. One of them is that you don’t have to buy new ones at every festival and season for changing the look. You just need new covers for meeting the requirements. Even more, you can constantly change the covers according to the season and festivals like you can put red ones for valentine’s day.
Now let’s come to styling. While doing that, make sure to arrange cushions in threes. Cushions should be of different sizes and texture. That will really add a decent touch to the area. Even more, just karate chop in the middle for a designer look. You may find it hard to believe, but almost every interior designer does that for a better look.
Here is another piece of advice for home interior design, Always style items in threes for a dynamic and complete look. Why not twos? Because placing two things together gives some sort of vague feeling. Styling in three completes the look. There is no such rule of sizes. However, try to put different sized items together. It will give a nice little designer touch to the room.
Front doors are the first thing you see, and a first impression should be the best one. That’s why it is very important to colour it nice and simple. In my opinion, you should paint it a glossy hue. My favourites are red, violet, blue, and green. They kind of provide a welcome look to you and your guests.
Your front entrance should also be warm and welcoming. In order to do that, stick with proper colour mixing and keep it decent. Don’t add unnecessary large wall mirror and other home decor items. It’ll look like space is filled up, and nobody likes that. Besides, it would be best to hang appropriate framed wall decor and other things along with warm lighting. That’ll complete the look.
Decorating a wall is very easy, simple, and one of the most crucial aspects of home decoration. There are various things to learn about this, but most important are how to hang wall art prints and what to hang? A very simple rule is to hang your framed wall art at average human eye height. That’s 56-58 inches. It will look neither floating nor drowning but just perfect.
If you want to hang several wall art prints, then start from 57 inches and build around it. In this way, your wall will look great. Also, you will have the perfect house interior design. Keep in mind that 57 inches should be the middle of framed wall art, not the point where you put the nail.
If you find your large wall mirror or framed wall art standing out and not looking perfect, then my advice is to bring it to eye level. That will make it look cohesive, and everything will come together as one piece.
Patterns are one of the most difficult to work with. They describe the style of a home. I don’t want to scare you, but patterns can really look messy if you are not careful with them. So read carefully before making a choice.
While working with patterns, think about scale and type for better modern interior design. You must be thinking about scale. Here’s a tip for you. Put one large and two short-scale patterns. Do not use three overwhelming sizes. It will look incomplete and not good. Focus on one main pattern. Make it the highlight and mix in other small patterns.
What types of patterns should be used? Think about the kinds of patterns while mixing in because it is really important. It would help if you were also careful about certain things like your patterns should not be fighting to dominate the look. They should be supporting each other to form a steady look. Make a perfect combination like geometric and floral with a solid. These patterns will look lovely. Ask an expert for little advice if you are having trouble with them.
As mentioned earlier, home decor is really important for improving the lifestyle of everyone. One must decorate their home properly for attaining higher standards of living. In order to achieve that, your home must have a balanced look. The colours should not disturb the eyes’ focus, and things should not look incomplete, etc.
For having a natural look, try to place those home decor items that allow your eyes to be calm and focus on the place as a whole rather than drawing attention to one small area. You should balance every direction of every single room of your home. Your sofa, cushions, framed wall art, lighting, plants, large wall mirrors, books, everything can be and must be balanced.
On the other side, when furniture is placed on only one side of the room, it looks unbalanced and incomplete, which is considered a very bad thing. That’s why it is important to balance everything.
We all have lots of home decor items of various sizes and scales in our home. Most people normally buy these based on their likes and dislikes. That’s good, but you should also consider another factor before paying, the size of different products.
So what sized items should you buy? The answer to this question is, “It Depends where you are going to place it”. You should not buy an item too big for a small space, nor should you purchase an item too small for a big place. To make your room look great, measure your space in mind, imagine how your selected product will look there, and then purchase the perfect home decor items.
Colouring is also very important in modern interior design. It is also one of those factors which decide the look of your house. You can colour your home in a monochromatic way. In this manner, you will have different shades of colours in your place. Or you can do pops of colour with a neutral palette and bring in one pop of colour. And again, you can use different shades of that precise colour to get a beautiful layered look.
You can also pick lots of colours and work off of complementary colours. You don’t necessarily have to think about bright and primary colours like red and green and blue and yellow. Think about the shades that come with those colours, so maybe you should choose navy and neutral. That will definitely go well. You can also ask for an exert’s advice about your favourite colours.
In order to achieve a cohesive look for your home, you should work within the same colour palette. It won’t be very hard for you. Besides, we all know that colours tend to stimulate certain emotions. That’s why it is important to mix in the same colour palette. That will even out colour and style around your home. It will also balance out the entire look.
In this article, I have shared some of the great home interior design tricks that almost every interior designer uses. These tricks will help you create a perfect home for yourself. But it's not over yet. There’s still one last piece of advice to share, and that is to Stay within your Budget. Do not spend unnecessarily on your wall art paintings or other interior decoration items if you can’t. Don’t get stressed about it. Remember, home is a place to relax. Please don’t turn it into a headache. I wish you all the luck with your home decor.
